11 items for your pregnancy wardrobe that can (almost) all be worn after the baby is born

This maternity capsule wardrobe I’ve created has been designed with your current wardrobe in mind. There’s a reason why a lot of the colours I’ve chosen are black/neutral and this is simply because black is universally flattering and neutrals are versatile, making these pieces easy to style with what you already own.

In my experience of building capsule maternity wardrobes for my clients, and also myself (during isolation), the aim is to own pieces that are comfortable enough to wear at home but also can be dressed-up by styling with a great jacket or boot if needed. I own a lot of these pieces myself and love how versatile they’ve already proved to be.

The every-season maxi dress

Legoe Heritage - Park Ave Maxi
This dress has invisible zips on both sides which means you can breastfeed in this once the baby is born. Made from 100% feather weight cotton it’s super soft and stretchy. Style with your fave trainer and crop knit in the cooler months and slide and straw sun hat when it gets warmer. Warning - if you’re heavier up top, this dress has a crew neckline and may not be as flattering as you think. They do have v-neck dresses also. Their sizing is true to size. The Indie Silk Dress II or Lover Shirt Dress may be styles that work better for you.

Breastfeeding-friendly swimsuit

Une Piece - Original Sexie Rashie in Botanical
Unepiece’s Original Sexie Rashie is so flattering with and without a bump. I went up a size which has worked really well from the early days of pregnancy and I’m still fitting in to it at 22 weeks.

They also have a divine Mama + Me range if you’d like to matchy matchy.

Linen button up

LJC Designs - Clem Top
Loving this high-low hemline. Style with your favourite maternity denim and once you’ve had the baby, style with drawstring shorts/palazzo pants for a chic, coastal vibe.

(Lucy, the Founder of this beautiful brand is also pregnant if you’re needing a fab maternity muse)

SANDAL

Petit Barcelona - Flat Menorquinas

Do you have an ‘every season’ shoe that’s easy to get on and off when the baby is born? These spanish sandals by Petit Barcelona are uber-comfortable and stylish and if you have a lot of block colours in your wardrobe, adding metallic (they also do these in animal print as well as glitter) to your feet can make the outfit pop.

Petit Barcelona stock sizing from 35 - 43 and have just opened a boutique at Westfield Chermside if you prefer to try on in store. These shoes are hand made on the island of Menorca and the Founders split their time between Spain and Brisbane.

SNEAKER

StyleTread - Woden Nora2 Cloud sneakers
Woden shoes are made from unique and sustainably sourced materials like natural cork, salmon leather, and recycled rubber, the distinctive and comfortable designs are the casual staples you never knew you needed. Whether you’re in a regional, urban or beachside location, these will work with any location.

Stretch drawstring dress

Bracewell - Robina Drawstring Dress

This drawstring dress is made from 100% organic cotton and isn’t a ‘maternity’ item however it’s loose enough around the tummy that it looks great with or without a bump. I wore mine to disguise the bump early on and also to show off the bump after 12 weeks. If you’re wanting a shade other than black, try their Berry as this goes nicely with pale pink or tan suede shoes. If you’re heavy up top/broad shoulders, I’d recommend going up a size for extra room in the sleeves.

If you’re not into a deep v neckline, they also have a crew neckline Drawstring dress in a number of colours.

little black dress

Angel Maternity - Body Hugging Dress

This is what I like to call a universally flattering maternity dress. I’m loving wearing mine with trainers and a longline cardigan. If you’re going to be heavily pregnant in summer, they also have sleeveless options. True to size.

Robe for when in hospital

Piyama - Short Kimono Robe Vintage Palm

There are a few treat yourself items that I believe every woman should have. When you’re exhausted after just giving birth and learning to breastfeed, cover up in style with this beautifully soft robe. Note**This is a Brisbane-Bali based Mother-daughter lifestyle brand.

Breastfeeding-friendly pyjama set

Piyama - Maggie Pyjama Set (Long)
For when you want to stay in your pyjamas all day but also want to look stylish when you have those drop-in visitors.

Faux leather ponte leggings

Pea in a Pod Maternity - Renee Faux Leather Leggings

Pea in a Pod’s faux leather leggings are next level comfort around the growing bump. They’re super breathable for faux leather due to the cotton panel at the back. I style mine with an oversized knit and love them because they’re a little more edgy than regular leggings. I stayed true to my normal size in these which is a size 8. I’m 168cm tall and the length of these are perfect on me. I wouldn’t recommend them for long-legged lasses.

exercise pant

Lulu Lemon - Align High-Rise Pant
Invest in a good pair of leggings that are going to stretch with you and encourage you to get outside and be active during your pregnancy. As I grew out of my normal exercise leggings that were too tight around the belly, I struggled with deciding whether I should buy maternity exercise leggings (approx $80 mark), a maternity pair from a cheap and cheerful fast-fashion brand (approx $20 and made from nasty sweaty fabric) or these Lulu Lemon leggings that I heard were AH-MAAZING because they stretch with you during pregnancy and with you back to your normal size. They’re $120 and rarely go on sale but the investment is worth it. I’ll have these for years and investing in one pair is better than 3 or 4 crummy ‘theyll do’ pairs. With an ever’changing body during pregnancy and afterwards, investing in pieces that make you feel good is important.
They come in a variety of lengths. I chose 25” which is a 7/8 length. I also stayed true to my normal size in these.
